It can be a simple mistake.
Someone clicks on a link to get some useful information that they were promised. The network is opened to vicious malware. And then the heartache begins. Data is corrupted. The network goes down. The company canít send invoices or fulfill orders. They have been hacked.
There is no guarantee that you can prevent an attack, but if you take a layered approach to security, you can buy the time you need. Call it defense in depth, but just make sure that you use it. While the concept is as old as IT security thinking itself, that doesnít make applying layers of security any the less relevant today. Choosing the correct layers, of course, is paramount.
