Network operations teams can no longer ignore the application layer. Application experience can make or break a digital enterprise, and today most enterprises are digital. To deliver optimal performance, network operations tools must be application-aware. However, application-awareness in the network and security tool layer is expensive and difficult to scale. Enterprises can mitigate these challenges with a network visibility architecture that includes application-aware network packet brokers (NPBs). EMA recommends that today’s network operations teams modernize their approach with full application visibility. EMA research has found that network teams are increasingly focused on directly addressing security risk reduction, service quality, end-user experience, and application performance. All of these new network operations benchmarks will require deeper application-level visibility. For instance, a network team focused on service quality will want to take a top-down approach to perfo

Application performance and delivery have changed. Should your network change too? Cloud is changing the fundamentals of how IT teams deliver applications and manage their performance. Applications are increasingly deployed farther from users, crossing networks outside of IT’s direct control. Instead of enterprise data centers, many apps now reside in public and hybrid cloud environments. There are even new breeds of applications, built upon microservices and containers. Today, IT needs modern solutions that: ? Extend on-premises networks, apps, and infrastructure resources to the cloud. ? Maintain high levels of performance, user experience, and security across all applications, including microservices based apps. ? Sustain operational consistency across on-premises and cloud environments. ? Move away from the expense, complexity, and poor performance of traditional networking methods. These solutions are available for apps running on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) through the allia

Network performance management tools can drive operational efficiency and improve network uptime, but many network managers haven’t adopted such tools. The potential benefits of a performance management tool are substantial, but network managers must make a business case for such investment. This white paper reveals why network operations teams should invest in network performance management solutions, and how they can justify to IT management and CIOs that the tool will deliver a substantial return on investment, along with improving IT’s ability to support business goals.

"Visibility into the live mix of network and application activity being hosted and delivered by the IT infrastructure has always is a 'must-have' for many aspects of IT planning and operations. But the greatest value and impact is achieved when those two viewpoints are blended together into one unified view. This paper reviews the primary challenges that IT teams face in establishing unified visibility, the key requirements that management solutions must meet to address those challenges, and examines a Riverbed solution that has been specifically designed to offer a path to success."

The Tenth Annual State of the Network Global Study focuses a lens on the network team’s role in security investigations. Results indicate that 88 percent of network teams are now spending time on security issues. In fact, out of 1,035 respondents, nearly 3 out of 4 spend up to 10 hours per week working exclusively on these types of problems - in addition to managing network upgrades, SDN, cloud, and big data initiatives. When it comes to technology adoption, both cloud and 100 GbE deployment continue to grow aggressively. VoIP adoption is closing in on 60 percent and software-defined networking (SDN) is projected to cross the halfway mark, indicating compounding network complexity amidst the ongoing struggle to ID security threats. With growth comes change and some trends identified in this year’s survey include a rise in email and browser-based malware attacks (63 percent) and an increase in sophistication (52 percent). Nearly 1 in 3 also report a surge in DDoS attacks, signaling a ne

For any sized organization, securing data and networks today is a daunting task. New vulnerabilities are discovered almost daily; new malware strains are developed as soon as a detection script is written for the old ones; and cybercriminals can buy prepackaged exploit kits on the Darknet backed by professional support teams. As a security analyst, you need more than a few point solutions designed to defend the network’s edge. You need visibility, perspective and an innate sense of when things just don’t seem right.

Intrusion Detection Systems have ceased to live up to their name and have lost their ability to spot today’s sophisticated intrusions. Consequently, cyber attackers are taking advantage of it by launching more evasive and strategic threats that spread rapidly within networks. And security teams are left without the proper tools or insight to identify intrusions that pose the biggest risk.

Software-defined architectures have transformed enterprises to become more application-centric. With application owners seeking public-cloud-like simplicity and flexibility in their own data centers, IT teams are under pressure to reduce wait times to provision applications. Legacy load balancing solutions force network architects and administrators to purchase new hardware, manually configure virtual services, and inefficiently overprovision these appliances. Simultaneously, new infrastructure choices are also enabling IT teams to re-architect applications into autonomous microservices from monolithic or n-tier constructs. These transformations are forcing organizations to rethink load balancing strategies and application delivery controllers (ADCs) in their infrastructure.

The advent of cloud computing and software-defined data center architectures for modern application delivery has made networking more sensitive than ever before. Applications in the digital age require networks that can expand and contract dynamically based on consumer demand. Enterprises are implementing software-defined networking (SDN) to deliver the automation required by these new environments, but the dynamic nature of SDN makes network management and monitoring fundamentally more challenging. Network infrastructure teams need monitoring tools that can provide visibility into these new and constantly changing networks. This white paper explores the importance of SDN monitoring and examines a leading example of a solution, CA Performance Management with CA Virtual Network Assurance integration.

What you can’t see will hurt you The situation is critical, because the percentage of encrypted user traffic has more than doubled since 2014, exceeding 80 percent, according to F5 Labs' 2017 TLS Telemetry report. So, of course, now there are SSL visibility solutions that provide decryption services allowing those security controls to see what they’re doing. But visibility, by itself, isn’t enough. Security teams and network operations have found that setting up decryption zones is not easy. Security teams often have to resort to manual daisy-chaining or tedious configuration to manage decryption/encryption across the entire security stack. And then they find that exceptions abound. And lastly, you need to scan your inbound and outbound traffic for tomorrow’s threats, and SSL Orchestrator is the tool that lets your security controls keep your organization’s name out of the papers and away from those pesky GDPR fines. As the networks become ever more essential to business processes, they are also increasing rapidly in size and complexity. Many factors can affect network availability and performance—increasing traffic, configuration problems, failed network elements, changes, and more. Since not all of these problems are hard failures, managing the network to detect and correct business-impacting problems requires new tools, strategies, and initiatives. To deliver the availability and performance business demands, network management teams need to optimize fault management and ensure availability, unify fault and performance management, automate change and configuration management to ensure compliance, and automate IT processes. This integrated approach is called Automated Network Management (ANM).

DDoS attacks are the primary threat to the availability of your network. In 2014, the number of DDoS attacks continues its trend upward in both size and complexity. Today, attacks topping 100Gbps have become common. So have complex threats such as application-layer attacks against DNS and encrypted Web services. Taxing security teams even more is the rise in multi vector attacks which target applications, existing stateful infrastructure like Firewalls and IPS devices and upstream connectivity, all in a single sustained attack.

The need for robust network security is growing, but IT security teams, resources, and budgets are shrinking at many organizations. That doesn’t mean you have to scale down your growth or skimp on key IT security areas, but it does mean you need to optimize your resources, starting with your network firewall team. Resource optimization involves the automation and streamlining of operational processes and management workflows so that your IT team members can be freed up to focus their time, skills, and expertise on priority projects. Furthermore, optimizing your resources helps preserve your budget while eliminating budgetary conflicts and slashing administrative costs.
