A survey commissioned by Intel Security and conducted by Evalueserve, in conjunction with the report, suggests that a majority of companies lack confidence in their ability to detect targeted attacks in a timely manner. Even companies best prepared to handle targeted attacks are taking the time to investigate high volumes of events. Key findings include 78% of those able to detect attacks in minutes had a proactive, real-time SIEM solution.

The attacks continue. The breaches occur. Penalties are assessed. While most universities manage to keep pace with the latest digital trends, they have been far less timely when it comes defending their networks and sensitive data against the latest targeted attacks and threats. This lack of protection is evident as recent headlines expose costly data breaches of student records and research, state and federal compliance violations, and a raft of other privacy and security issues that put students, alumni, staff, and the institutions themselves at considerable risk.

Behind the vast majority of legitimate alerts sent to the IT security team is an attacker who exploits multiple attack techniques to infiltrate your infrastructure and compromise your critical data and systems. Targeted multi-phased attacks include a series of cyber attack chain steps: recognition, vulnerability analysis, operation and, finally, exfiltration of critical business data.

Two-thirds of all internally generated email sent is from employees communicating within an organization*. Yet most IT organizations only focus on inbound email when it comes to protecting against cyber-attacks. In doing so, they ignore the serious risks posed by internal and outbound emails and the actions of two at risk groups of users - the compromised and careless employee. Mimecast Internal Email Protect extends the security capabilities of Targeted Threat Protection to provide advanced inside-the-perimeter defenses. Watch this on-demand webinar where Mimecast’s Chief Trust Officer, Marc French, and Cyber Security Strategist, Bob Adams discuss: The top things to do to optimize your Targeted Threat Protection implementation and prepare for addressing the threats on the inside. The multiple ways internal email threats start, and why human error nearly always plays a role. The scale and impact of attacks that spread via internal email. Cyber criminals constantly innovate their threat tactics to more efficiently breach organizations and make off with valuable data. As cybercrime evolves, we see increased innovation in the hacking tools and techniques used to evade known security mechanisms. In the past few years, we have seen more advanced, targeted attacks, where hackers spent ample time investigating the target and tailoring the threat. Keeping up with new attack techniques, and effectively defending against advanced threats, is perhaps the biggest challenge facing security teams today. In a world of cyberthreats where the only constant is change, architecting a cybersecurity solution that dynamically adapts to constant change is crucial.

As fraudsters grow in sophistication and experience, they often aren’t acting alone. Syndicated crime rings are big business around the world. In the fraud economy, different fraudsters specialize in different aspects of the attack, from gathering data and creating profiles of targeted victims, to socially engineering call center agents, to creating tools like robotic dialers. These fraudsters might work alone, selling their skills on the black market. In other cases, fraudsters are running entire call centers overseas dedicated to executing attacks.

Human targeted attacks continued to lead the pack in 2016. Attackers’ used automation and personalisation to increase the volume and click-through rates of their campaigns. Taking a page from the B2B e-marketer’s playbook, cyber criminals are adopting marketing best practices and sending their campaigns on Tuesdays and Thursdays when click-through rates are higher. Meanwhile, BEC and credential phishing attacks targeted the human factor directly--no technical exploits needed. Instead, they used social engineering to persuade victims into sending money, sensitive information and account credentials. Timing is everything—attackers know that hitting your employees with a well-crafted email at the just the right time produces the best results. Of course, this varies by region. So if you are responsible for worldwide SecOps, you need visibility into not only attack patterns but also when and which employees tend to click.

A zero-day threat is a vulnerability that becomes known to the vendor on the same day it becomes known to the public, meaning IT assets targeted by a zero-day threat won't have a patch available when it's needed. However, zero-day attacks operate in a realm of the probable - they work only because there are exploitable vulnerabilities within IT systems. Many of these can, and should be prevented. This guide describes why organizations are vulnerable to zero-day attacks, and what you can do to add a zero-day offense to your existing vulnerability management processes to protect your organization's assets and data.

From stolen consumer data to sensitive data leaks, it seems that no one’s data has been safe in recent years. For numerous reasons, like misconfigured storage repositories and unpatched vulnerabilities, this trend is likely to continue. The integration of digital technology into all areas of business has resulted in more of our data being stored on computers and websites targeted by hackers, which has significantly increased the number of data breaches as well as organizations’ vulnerability to malware attacks. For example, the Equifax breach impacted 145 MM consumers, and with more employees working remotely on a wide range of devices, the threat landscape has expanded. The meteoric rise of the public cloud has compounded this issue, as data security requires new knowledge and skill sets in short supply, often leading to misconfigured and insecure solutions. Companies need to adopt the approach that every piece of data in their possession, on-premises or in the cloud, must be encryp

With an estimated 500,000 'Internet of Things' devices using default security credentials it's little wonder that the recent Mirai botnet's DDoS attack was able to cause such widespread disruption. But it isn't just the average home-user that's at risk. Organizations like yours are being targeted with bespoke malware in order to compromise your network and add your servers and devices to malicious botnets. This paper explains why these attacks are so successful, how a typical infection takes place and what security systems your organization should have in place to defend against botnet proliferation.
