New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TÜV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plant’s overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. A New Security Model Worth Understanding—and Emulating Enterprise security traditionally relied on a fortress strategy that locked down user endpoints and created walls around the network. Today, this strategy cannot support or secure the use of mobile devices and SaaS capabilities, which exist outside the fortress. As a result, Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) have been looking for new solutions that can secure these technologies today, and adapt as threats and business needs change. The credit card industry’s security model is one example that provides a new way to think about risk and contain it—that is, if you can see past the occasional bad rap it’s gotten from attacks and breaches.

Trust and consumer confidence is the foundation upon which the Internet has been built. Leading commerce and financial services companies worldwide have long used Secure Socket Layer and Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) technologies to secure customer communications and transactions. But with the rise of Web 2.0 and social networking, people are spending more time online and logged in, and they are communicating much more than just their credit card numbers. Unfortunately, Web security practices have not always kept pace with these changes. Many organizations use the SSL/TLS protocol to encrypt the authentication process when users log in to a website, but do not encrypt subsequent pages during the user’s session. This practice is risky because it leaves website visitors vulnerable to malicious online attacks, and can result in millions of users being unknowingly exposed to threats simply by visiting a trusted website. This white paper discusses the imperative need for Always On S

This global corporation of quick service restaurants has about 17,500 locations serving millions of customers each day with concepts including popular pizza, chicken, and Tex-Mex chains. Most of the restaurants are on a wired network with Cisco routers, the main function of which is to process credit card purchases. With so many transactions taking place every day, the corporation decided to invest in a wireless failover system to guarantee uninterrupted connection. After careful consideration, the corporation chose Cradlepoint to provide “four-nines” (99.99% or better) connectivity via 3G/4G/LTE or wireless backup. - See more at: https://cradlepoint.com/success_stories/quick-service-restaurant-chain#sthash.ODr3J5uT.dpuf

Matthew Coy, Safelite’s Vice President of Information Technology, is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s IT infrastructure, including selecting, administering, and supporting technology products. The company handles personally identifiable information, including credit card information and insurance data collected from several sources, and must comply with insurance industry regulations and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. Safelite is the target of constant external attacks. The organization experienced ongoing security issues stemming from infected software, drivebys and other malicious downloads. According to Matthew, “A lot of malware and email viruses were making it through the environment, all bypassing our email security and AV.” Not only were the security controls ineffective, the previous AV platform required nearly 150 hours per week to manage. Matthew knew Safelite needed to make a change, and fast. Having worked with Cylance® at two previous companies, he was confident CylancePROTECT® could significantly improve Safelite’s endpoint security. Read the full case study to learn about the results Cylance was able to deliver.

Gaining the trust of online customers is vital for the success of any company that transfers sensitive data over the Web. When shopping online, consumers are concerned about identity theft and are therefore wary of providing untrusted sources with their personal information, especially their credit card details. Other types of online businesses require different but equally sensitive information. People are reluctant to provide their national insurance numbers, passwords, or other confidential personal information, or sometimes even just name, address, and phone number. Perhaps the information will be intercepted in transit, they fear, or perhaps the destination itself is manned by imposters with ill intent.  The result is an abandoned transaction.
